Avenir is a typeface designed and developed by Adrian Frutiger in 1988, who is a prominent typeface designer of the 20^th century. It is released by the company Linotype GmbH, which is now being replaced by a company of Monotype Corporation. The name Avenir is derived from the French word “future”. The fonts have been made by the roman fonts by electronically slanting. In an interview, Adrian Frutiger said that “these have constructed characters from which the element of a handwriting movement has been removed”.

It was made with the intention of making a typeface which is more organic and humanist interpretation of highly geometric types. It was originally developed in 1988 having three weights. Adrian worked with the Akira Kobayashi, who is Linotype designer to debug some of the screen display issues and Avenir Next is formed. The typeface family is increased to 24 fonts having weight of 6, each with a roman and italic version, width 2: normal and condensed. The glyph set is now being expanded to include small caps, old style figures, subscripts, superscripts and ligatures. The numbering system of Frutiger was abandoned in favour of more conventional weight names. By taking this idea Janna is formed as an Arabic variant by designer Nandine Chahine. In Arabic the word Janna means “heaven”. The Arabic version is based on the previously released “Frutiger” but is more angular. It is very easy to download Avenir font free of cost. Even in the films it is being going to be used for example the upcoming movie of J. J. Abrams in 2011 super 8. The avenir is being referred as the future of Amsterdam.
